Aloe Vera

What are your thoughts about Aloe Vera as a survival prep?

Have kept a pot of it around for decades.

Great burn ointment.

Also keep in mind that vitamin E gelcaps are

An even stronger burn ointment.

Just prick them with your pocket knife and apply.

Vit E is good for more than just burns too. The gel caps are a GREAT thing to keep around. It helps with all sorts of cuts, burns, abrasions, etc. Helps reduce scaring as well and speeds up healing time.

As for the OP. Definintly get a plant of aloe going, never hurts to have some around thats for sure.

Any idea on what the shelf life of vitamin E gelcaps is?

FWIW, the bottle I just got this past May has an expiration date of 11/12. In reality, they likley last much longer. In fact I've had bottles for about twice that long, but whether or not they remain as effective that long, I dont know.

Aloe is edible as well.

Don't mix aloe vera with Desitin. Since they are both good for heat rash, you would think that combining them would be even better. It's not. It sets up a heck of a reaction and burns like you wouldn't believe. Ask me how I found this out if you really want to know.

How exactly does one consume it?

Yeah just grow your own aloe plants. They're very hardy. If you get a burn, break off a leaf and the juice is just as soothing as the packaged stuff. Not a lot there but how often do you burn yourself? And almost always it's a small burn. If you have a serious burn you're gonna need more than aloe anyway.

Got fried at the beach this weekend... very glad to have a lot on hand. Good for more than just burns.

Definitely have a little stocked away.

O yah, sunburns I guess. But really that's something you should avoid also, if you don't want melanoma anyway =P But I know it happens when you don't plan on it so :)

Short answer: Remove skin and eat.

It is often juiced, sometimes used in smoothies or deserts.

Aloe plants are the easiest damn plant to grow. Put it in a pot and water it every once in a while if you remember.

It will produce tons of offsets that you can pot up and give away to friends and family.
